“Amelia” is a true story about a visionary, lover, hero, legend and icon – Amelia Earhart. This long awaited biopic is directed by a cult female director Mira Nair (“Monsoon Rain”) based on an original script by Ronald Bass.

The movie tells us a story about an American icon Amelia Earhart, first female pilot, and the first person who flew around the world. (Amelia was also the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic Ocean). She was always fascinated and inspired by flying, always trying to find thrills in dangerous flights and actions, and was known for her line “I want to be free. There’s more to life than being a passenger!”

This is a true story, and therefore it has an even bigger impact. Amelia Earhart was a woman whole nation cheered for, a lady who wrote pages of history books, and a complex personality facing her personal fears and demons every day.

Indian director Mira Nair was an excellent choice for this movie, because she is a true master in portraying true, moving stories about people who became larger than life. “Amelia” was filmed across the globe, in South Africa, NY, Toronto, Oshawa, Nova Scotia, Niagara on the Lake, and Dunnville (Ontario). Lead actress Hilary Swank learned how to fly a plane, but 3 more female pilots were hired for the movie to work on portraying Amelia Earhart during her flying sequences.

Cast is what also makes this movie memorable. Hilary Swank, two times Academy Award Winner (for “Boys don’t cry” and “Million Dollar Baby”) is playing the role of Amelia Earhart. Golden Globe Winner and Hollywood icon Richard Gere is playing George P. Putnam, tycoon publisher and Amelia’s eventual husband. Ewan McGregor is also brilliant portraying her lover and friend Gene Vidal (who eventually became Federal aviation administrator).

Although first reviews were not very positive, Mira Nair said that she is honoured to be making a film about the woman who changed the course of history and became a true all American legend. It was a matter of time when someone will make a movie about charismatic Amelia Earhart, and it is great that this brilliant crew had that opportunity.
